This week we talk to Sarah of RedsRibbons who is the current CraftBritannia Shop of the Week . Sarah creates handmade bridal and burlesque pieces and tells us about her life and inspiration…
When you are not doing Etsy related things, what are you doing?
I am also a circus performer so when I’m not crafting in my sewing room it becomes my rehearsal studio where I spend time creating acts for shows which I perform internationally. I also love to go camping and dog walking in my spare time.
What material do you most enjoy working with?
I know I should say ribbon, but it’s not! I absolutely love lace and beaded trim, and have made a whole range of headbands using some of my local haberdashery’s beautiful range of shiny trims.
If you could try a new craft, what would it be?
I would love to have the patience to do quilting , My grandmother and one of my best friends are quilters, and the beautiful pieces they have created will always be treasured by those who receive them. My bed spread is almost finished, and I cant wait to see it.
Tell us about what inspires and motivates you
I am inspired by theatre, circus, burlesque and vintage fashion, as well as cartoons, love, art deco, books, and women. I am motivated by my wonderful husband, who works very hard as a carpenter, and I strive to make him as proud of me as I am of him. And, of course, needing to pay the bills is a big motivator too!
Tell us about one handmade item that you own and love
My mother-in-law is an amateur teacher potter, and we have some lovely dishes that she made for us. I treasure them as they were made especially for us.
What plans do you have for your shop in the future?
The Future !! who knows , I tend to live very much in the now but I hope that my shop carries on getting more sales and that my products meet the current trends. Eventually i’d love my own little studio shop where people come in for bespoke fantasy accessories for their weddings, performances or lifestyles.
Thank you Sarah, we love your sense of style and it was great to learn more about you!
